'Yes, the road is closed, no you can't go that way

From Morro Bay we wanted to drive North on Hwy 1 along the coast. You can do so to past San Simeon, where Hearst Castle is.

And a little North of there to Ragged Point. At Ragged Point, there is a road block, and they force people to turn around. As Hwy 1 is closed from Ragged Point to Carmel, CA (around 75 miles) due to major mudslides and also a bridge is totally torn apart. This section will likely be closed for more than a year! It's too bad because that goes through Big Sur and is sheer cliffs into the ocean and spectacularly beautiful. Would have been lovely to stay in campgrounds along that way.

Love the signs and picture they post at the turn around area. Lot of people try to get in only locals with drivers license and road workers can though. We tried.
