Driving on the way to Smoky Mountains National Park we drove through Knoxville, TN.
We weren't really too hungry until we came up to wood smokers! It smelled so great had to stop. They even gave us samples. Tasted the ribs, pulled pork, and decided on the ribs. these are the best ribs we agreed we have ever had. Smoked slowly over wood and falling off the bone. Would stop again if in the area!

Stop and go traffic to see 1 deer?

Cades Cove, TN

On trips in Smoky Mountains is listed Cades Cove. It's a 22 mile loop drive. Drive may have wildlife of elk, bears, deer, etc.

Saw some historic buildings, but mostly were in a traffic jam, because people stopped to see 1 deer at a time & take it's picture! :) Come to IL in the fall in a cornfield, we have 50! LOL.

We also saw a TN safari-style truck! A pickup with camp chairs in the back!. Not sure what they'd have done if they'd have seen a bear though!

Appalachian Clubhouse

View Denzil & Brenda Eastern US Travels on Vanabout's travel map.

Really cool spot though next to campground . The Appalachian Clubhouse was built in 1910. Club members, most from Knoxville, built rustic cabins nearby to serve as weekend or summer retreats before Smoky Mtn Nat. Park was created. You can rent it for weddings, etc. Brenda enjoyed trying out the rockers on the screen in porch area.An old community that was purchased by the Smoky National Parks with the lifetime use of the families but not to go to next family member. Must have been a lovely time in those days there.

From Wikipedia

The Fraterville Mine disaster occurred on May 19, 1902. 216 miners died from the explosion., making it the worst mining disaster in the state's history.

Info said the explosion killed all adult males except 3 in this town. Sad to see so many graves all with the same date of death..

Cumberland Gap N. Hist. Park

Short cut through Appalachian Mountains

View Denzil & Brenda Eastern US Travels on Vanabout's travel map.

From the viewpoint you can see 3 US States, KY, TN, and VA.

[quote]The Cumberland Gap is a narrow pass through the long ridge of the Cumberland Mountains, within the Appalachian Mountains, near the junction of the U.S. states of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Famous in American colonial history for its role as a key passageway through the lower central Appalachians, it was an important part of the Wilderness Road and is now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
